CHAPTER EIGHT

The Point Of No Return

It was two days before the next full moon, and the top-level cageys were getting more aggressive… more insane, at the approach of the subsequent Harvesting. “I’m worried about Lincoln,” Charlie said to Xavier, Connor, and Jaysen as the covers reached the ground. He turned on his flashlight and continued, “he’s become so reclusive. Please, boys, promise me you’ll watch out for him when I’m gone, at least until you escape.”

Connor sat up on his top bunk and hit his head on the cage roof. “For fucks sake, that bloody hurt. I don’t think I’m ever going to get used to this,” he said as he rubbed his head, “Charlie, you’re going to come back, just like last time.” Charlie looked up, trying to see Connor. “Well, just in case I don’t come back, please… promise me,” Charlie said as tears started falling. “I know he can be a dick, but he’s an all-right guy once you get to know him. He needs a chance.”

Connor climbed down from his bunk and sat next to Charlie. “Charlie, how many more chances do we have to give him? It’s always the same. He insults us, lies to us, says he’s sorry, then does it all over again.” Xavier stood and walked over to the chamber pot. “Lincoln has been through a lot. It will take him some time… Don’t worry, Charlie, I’ll look out for him… even with that eyepatch and the attitude, he’s still a pretty sight,” laughed Xavier. Jaysen stayed silent, taking a swig from his flask and watching the three men. He stood and started pacing back and forth in the small space the four men shared. “What if we break out on the full moon, we can get Izzy… and you, Charlie,” Jaysen finally said. Connor, Charlie, and Xavier all went silent.

“So you’re going on the full moon?” asked Xavier in a disappointed tone. “You knew this was happening, Xavier,” said Connor bluntly. “I know,” replied Xavier, “I just… I wasn’t expecting it to happen so soon. I hoped I’d have gone to The Harvest before you left.” Xavier looked down, “I’m gonna miss you guys,” he said as a tear ran down his left cheek. “You can still come with us,” said Charlie in a reassuring tone, “it’s not too late… we can figure out another way to help your family… I have some friends that could help.” Xavier smiled at Charlie, “I can’t do that. I have to stay here, anyway. I have to look out for Lincoln. I told you I would,” he shrugged playfully as he finished, and the men all smiled sympathetically. “So this is happening then?” asked Charlie. “This is happening,” said Jaysen as he nodded.

Silence filled the cage. In just two days, Charlie would be going to The Harvesting. Jaysen and Connor would be in The Detachment Gibbets, attempting to escape and rescue Charlie and Izzy, and Xavier would be in the cage, alone. “What
